The Short and Shorter of It: An Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Flash Fiction
February 27, Saturday, 1-3 PDT; 4-6 EDT
Chella Courington
What is flash fiction (or sudden fiction or micro-fiction or short-short fiction)? We know it is short, but is it a story? Can writing so brief include the necessary elements of fiction like plot and character? This introduction will discuss different theories of flash fiction and the strategies employed to maximize the emotional impact of such short prose. Among the writers briefly discussed: Richard Bausch, Robert Olen Butler, Kim Cinquee, Lydia Davis, Sherrie Flick, Carolyn Forche, Ernest Hemingway, Jamaica Kincaid, Augusto Monterroso, and Mark Twain. The talk will begin and end with a very short writing exercise.
Please join us as we learn from scholar and former Literature Professor Chella Courington the art of Flash Fiction. We will learn from one of the best as well as use our imaginations and hone our craft in the art of writing.
