Welcome aspiring authors, writers, and thank you for your interest in the Breaking Rules Publishing Short Story Book Project!

Our goal? To simply give writers a place to show their work. To join with other writers and offer them an opportunity to learn from their peers, show their work and join a collaborative to create a short story book. There will be many opportunities for the publication of these books to occur. Specific guidelines will be posted, beyond that, we encourage you to tell a story that matters to you. Write something you believe in. Tell a story in a way that only you can tell it. In other words, write something that moves you, that dazzles you, that says precisely what you want to say in precisely the way you want to say it. As long as you do so in the word limits indicated, and in the suggested theme.


Program Rules

Eligibility: The Short Story Book Project is open all adult fiction and non-fiction writers. The genres that we are involved in are - Romance - Science Fiction - History - Mystery - Drama - Action / Adventure - Horror - Poetry - LGBT stories in all of these genres.  An author is welcome to submit as many stories as they like in as many genres. The fiction piece must an original work of the entrant. At the discretion of Breaking Rules Writing Competitions, submissions may be published in the Breaking Rules Writing Competitions Newsletter, online journal or the organization's website and social media sites. Entrants retain copyright on his/her own individual work. We ask that the stories be no longer than 50 pages and no fewer than 20. The age requirement for this project is for the writer to be at least 18 years of age.

Submission Guidelines: *We reserve the right to reject submissions solely on the basis of conformity to these guidelines, so please take note of the requirements that follow.* Entries must be submitted in Microsoft Word format. Please use standard manuscript formatting: Times New Roman, 12-point, double-spaced. All files will be opened, formatted for the purpose of judging, and saved in Microsoft Word, and we cannot guarantee that formatting will be maintained for files submitted in other formats.

Please name your file with your name and the title of the piece, and separate your name from the title with an underscore character. For example, BreakingRules_WordOfMouth, would be an acceptable file name. If your piece does not have a title, use 'Untitled' after the underscore. Breaking Rules Writing Competitions reserves the right to reject a piece solely based on compliance to the submission guidelines, so please make every effort to conform.

Entries must be must follow the word/page count and theme selected. Use the word count function on your computer to determine if your piece conforms to our guidelines. Please edit your piece before submitting.

Project Deadline Dates: The deadline for each Project Book will be clearly marked. Entries received after that date will not be considered for an entry at a later date.

Directions: email your entry to - info@breakingrulespublishing.com. Make sure you title your work appropriately. You are also asked to offer all of your contact information - email - cell phone and address. 

Selection: Entries will be judged on originality and creativity. Entries over or under the designated page count, with a difference of 5 pages, will not be considered. Selections are based on genre and the available space within the book. The identities of the authors will be placed at the beginning of every story.

Royalties: The sales of each book will be held separately and independently. Royalties will be distributed on the 15th of August and February of each year. After printing costs - a 50/50 split will be in place - 50% of the sales will be split between each author of each particular book. The remaining 50% will be held by Breaking Rules Writing Competitions. Of that the BRP portion - 50% will go directly to administrative costs, the remaining 50% will be placed in our scholarship programs. 

Fees: There are NO charges or fees to participate in this project.

Decisions: The judges will consists of members of the Breaking Rules Writing Competitions staff as well as guest authors, specifically invited to judge the Breaking Rules Writing Competitions contests. All decisions made by the judges are final.

Notification: Winners or selected authors will be announced and will be notified by phone or email. Names of the winners or selected authors will appear on the website and in other publicity pieces, including, but not limited to electronic announcements, social media, press releases, and news articles. Winning pieces may also be published on the Breaking Rules Writing Competitions website, social media, blogs and newsletters.

Copyrights: The author retains all copyrights to the submitted work. At the discretion of Breaking Rules Writing Competitions, winning pieces may be published online within the companies website, social media sites, blogs and newsletters. By entering the contest, you consent to the publication of your work if it is selected, and you grant permission for Breaking Rules Writing Competitions to print the work in future journals and publicity pieces, and other formats or contexts determined by, and at the discretion of, Breaking Rules Writing Competitions. Please note that other publications may not accept your work as "unpublished" work. If you do subsequently publish your work in another publication, proper attribution must be given to Breaking Rules Writing Competitions and/or Breaking Rules Writing Competitions website. As a condition of submission, you will be required to agree to the terms of the Contributor's Agreement specifying your rights and obligations under the contest terms.

Privacy Policy: Breaking Rules Writing Competitions collects personal information for the purpose of notifying contest winners. All information submitted is kept in confidence, used solely for notification purposes, and shall not be made public. Breaking Rules Writing Competitions does not lease, sell, or share personal information collected.

For purposes of privacy, if you are selected for publication, you will only be identified by your first and last name. Any other personal information will not be used. For example, you would appear in Breaking Rules Writing Competitions Newsletter as John Doe. If you need confirmation of publication write us at info@breakingrulespublishing.com and we can prepare a letter for you.

Withdrawals: If you so desire, you are more than welcome to withdraw. Simply send us an email to info@breakingrulespublishing.com requesting to be removed from the project and we'll do the rest. Please make sure to place the word "Withdraw" in the subject line of your email.
